Why is it called off-piste?

In North America, anything outside of the resort boundary is often called backcountry skiing. Areas within the resort boundary that are not marked by piste markers, or in some cases are not groomed are likely to be referred to as off-piste. These off-piste skiing areas are avalanche controlled and patrolled.
